I dedicate this blog to volcanoes and lovely volcanic landscapes. I am not a geologist/volcanologist, just a person who enjoys beautifully rough and majestic volcanic scenery. The feeling of being in such an unpredictable and often dangerous area is certainly distinct and unforgettable. All photos by Bart.K

Nisyros volcano, Greece, 7th June 2015
Along with Santorini (which I visited in July 2014) Nisyros stratovolcano is the only Greek volcano which is considered dormant. It erupted in 1422 (unconfirmed phreatic eruption),1871, 1873 and 1888. The caldera of Nisyros is a 3 kilometres to 4 kilometres wide. Stefanos is the largest and most often visited crater of volcano. It's surrounded by post-caldera lava domes. Inside Stefanos crater curious visitor can find active fumaroles and boiling mud pools. Certainly Nisyros volcano is more fumarolically active than Nea Kameni island of Santorini volcano.
