Exploding lake Tobellus Small (Tobellus Maly)

Lake Tobellus Small lies very close to its bigger neighbour Tobellus Big near Stanczyki village, Suwalszczyzna, Poland. Tobellus Small lake is not volcanic - it's a perfect example of kettle hole, a hollow (typically filled by a lake) that results from the melting of a mass of ice trapped in glacial deposits. Tobellus Maly exploded during the afternoon of 30th June/or 31st May 1926. Upcoming storm caused an explosion of methane gas trapped at the bottom of the lake. There was a huge blast and a big fountain of mud. The lake disappeared and re-appeared again after two months. According to local tales the eruption of methane gas killed some people, but I can't truly verify this information. So not only Cameroon have exploding lakes (Nyos, Monoun). Poland have one too!
