The animals live in small herds on the slopes of Etna volcano.  They can be used even to predict eruptions of Sicilian volcano! More in this article: https://www.icarus.mpg.de/11706/a-four-legged-early-warning-system

Alcantara gorge, Sicily, 9th May 2015

From Wikipedia: Several thousand years ago, the river bed was blocked by a lava flow from Mount Etna. As the lava was cooled much more quickly by the water than it would have done otherwise, it crystallised in the form of columns. Over the next millennia, the river naturally eroded a channel through these columns, resulting in impressive gorges and ravines such as the "Gole dell'Alcantara". Spectacular place - not only for geologists.

Etna volcano, Rifugio Sapienza, Sicily, 9th May 2015 - Part II

It seems that strombolian activity started in New SE Crater on Etna volcano as I am writing this post. Hopefully we can expect another eruptive paroxysm of Etna (Mongibello) pretty soon!
