Various photos of famous Santorini caldera including Nea Kameni island taken during the trip to Santorini at the end of June 2014. Santorini caldera apart from its exceptional beauty is possibly most famous from colossal volcanic eruption which happened 3600 years ago or so (some time between 1627 and 1600 BC). The ancient island of Thera was almost completely destroyed and apparently due to this eruption Minoan culture on Crete collapsed. The eruption produced massive pyroclastic flows and deadly tsunami.
